약속을 잊지 않고 별을 보고 찾아온 동방박사 이야기

1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judae, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem
2 and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him"
3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jeruslem with him.
4 When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born
5 "In Bethlehem in Juda," they replied, "fo this is what the prophet has written:
6" 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Isreal.'"
7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared.
8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him."
9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.
10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.

동방박사 이야기를 마태복음 2장이 유일하다는데 여기에는 3명이었다거나 그들을 왕으로 부르거나 기록되어 있지는 않다. Magi(그리스어 마고스 magos)는 점성가라는 뜻으로 알려져 있다. 그들이 캐스퍼, 멜키오르, 발타자르 3명의 왕이었다는 전통은 후에 생겨났다고 한다.
그러면 그들이 본 별은 무슨 별이었을까? 새로운별, 혜성, 행성의 겹침, 목성의 역행 운동등 천문학자 가운데서 다양한 추측들이 있다. 자유로운 추측은 가능하지만 마태의 동방박사 이야기는 과학적 사실 관계를 나타내려고 한 것이 아니라 하나님은 우리와 기꺼이 관계를 맺고 싶으셨다는 것이다.
인간을 창조한 신이 인간의 몸으로 인간에게서 아기로 태어난다. 그 아기는 다른 아이과 똑같이 나약하여 우리의 보살핌을 받아야만 했다. 이일도 약속된 일이었으며 그 약속을 믿고 멀리서 별을 보고 찾아온 사람들이 있었다. 놀랍지 않은가.
