11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh
12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
13 When they had gone, and angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up", he said "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him."
14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left fro Egypt,
15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son."
16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.
17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
18 "A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more."
19 After Herod died, and angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt
20 and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child's life are dead."
21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel.
22 But when he heard that Archelaus was regining in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to got there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee,
23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets: "He will be called a Nazarene."

동방박사는 태어난 아기 예수를 위해 예물을 드리고 경배드렸다. 그리고 그들의 꿈을 통해 지시받은 대로 요셉과 마리아에게 아기예수를 데리고 헤롯을 피해 이집트에 있도록 했다. 헤롯은 박사에게 그 아기를 찾으면 알려달라고 했으나 자신을 속인 것을 알고 몹시 분노하여 그 나이쯤 되는 사내 아기들을 모두 죽인다. 헤롯의 두려움과 분노는 유아학살이라 사탄의 힘이 나타나게 했지만, 예수를 죽이지 못한 것은 마치 모세의 출생 때를 연상하게 한다. 모세의 출생 때 당시 두려움과 분노에 쌓인 왕은 사탄의 역사로 히브리인이 낳은 모든 남자아이를 학살했지만 실패한 것과 같다.
AD 4에 헤롯대왕이 죽고 그의 아들 아켈라오가 유대 지방의 왕으로 이어받는다. 이집트에 있던 요셉에게 꿈으로 주님의 천사가 나타나 아기와 마리아를 데리고 다시 이스라엘 땅으로 돌아가라 한다. 요셉은 여전히 헤롯 족속의 왕이 두려웠지만 그의 꿈이 지시를 받고 갈릴리 지방의 나사렛으로 가서 살았다. 예수의 탄생 부터 나사렛에 정착하기까지 선지자들을 시켜 예언한 데로 그 말씀들을 이루셨다고 마태는 기록하고 있다.
