1 "Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2 'So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by mend. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.
4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
5 'And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.
8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9 "This, then, is how yoiu should pray: " 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.'

어떤 목적에 의해 모인 무리는 그 안에 크든 작든 경쟁의식이 생길 수 밖에 없다. 교회 공동체도 마찬가지 인데 아무리 보지 않으려 해도 믿음의 척도를 나름 기도와 봉사로 두게 되는 착각을 종종 하게 된다. '저 분은 참 기도를 열심해, 봉사에 빠지지 않아 맞아 믿음이 참 좋지' 하며 평판이 올라간다. 그걸 머쓱이며 무시하려 해도 마음속에 작은 보상과 같이 되어 도파민이 분비되서 일까, 그것이 기분 좋아 점점 더 공동체 안으로 깊이 사람들 의식 속으로 들어가게 된다. 대게 그러면 이미 이 땅에서 자기가 주는 상을 받았으므로 하나님 나라에서는 받을 상이 없다 한다.
기도 할 때, 의를 행할 때 사람들에게 나타나는 것을 경계하라고 한다. 다른 사람에게 영향을 미치는 것을 우려하는 것보다, 행하는 그가 자기 상을 받는 것에 그칠 것이기 때문에 말씀하신다. 기도의 힘은 누구로 부터 나오는가? 기도는 힘과 능력을 나타내는 통로이지만 그 힘의 원천인 하나님은 수단인가 목적인가? 수단이 되어 기도에 대한 응답이 이루어 질수도 있다. 그래서 예수는 다음과 같이 기도하라고 한다.
하늘에 계신 우리 아버지여 이름이 거룩히 여김을 받으시오며 나라에 임하시오며 뜻이 하늘에서 이루어 진 것 같이 땅에서도 이루어지이다. 오늘 우리에게 일용할 양식을 주시옵고 우리가 우리에게 죄 지은 자를 사하여 준 것 같이 우리 죄를 사하여 주시옵고 우리를 시험에 들게 하지 마시옵고 다만 악에서 구하시옵소서 나라와 권세와 영광이 아버지께 영원히 있사옵나이다. 아멘
주기도문에서 나를 위한 요청은 하루 먹을 음식과 우리 죄를 사하여 주시고, 유혹에 들게 마시고 악으로 부터 구해 달라는 것이다 그리고 하나님 나라를 위한 요청이 있다. 하나님의 나라가 하늘에서 이루어진것 같이 하나님의 의지가 이 땅에서도 이루소서. 하나님 나라의 권세와 영광이 영원합니다라고 고백한다.
